Diane’s favorite book on nutrition:

Reading about food and nutrition, I have to admit it’s something that I really enjoy.  My favorite book on nutrition is Michael Pollan’s Food Rules An Eater’s Manual.  Clients come into my office overwhelmed with  the information about nutrition that they are bombarded with on a daily basis.  Michael Pollan’s philosophy is eating healthy should be simple and it should not be complicated.  In Food Rules , He has 64 fun rules about nutrition. If you follow his rules, you will definitely be healthier.  Here are some of my favorites:

# 13 Eat only foods that will eventually rot: The more processed a food is the longer the shelf life.

# 10 Avoid foods that are pretending to be something they are not: Artificial sweeteners  and margarine  are a perfect examples.

# 25 Eat your colors: The colors of different vegetables reflect the different antioxidant phytochemicals they contain, which help to protect against chronic disease.

# 47 Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored: Try to be aware of the reasons why you are eating.  Ask yourself , the reason you are eating.  Are you eating for comfort or entertainment?

#52 Buy smaller plates and glasses: This will help you to eat less.  Using smaller utensils can slow you down. Such as eating soup with a teaspoon or a yogurt with a tiny baby spoon is helpful.

#64 Break the rules once in awhile: I love this rule. It is good to be flexible.  Michael Pollan says “obsessing over food rules is bad for your happiness”
